 The RCMP Victim Services Program objectives are designed to lessen the impact of crime and trauma on victims and their families. We are here to assist in their recovery by providing emotional and practical support, to increase victim safety as well as reduce the risk of further victimization, to increase victims’ level of participation in the criminal justice system, and to increase the effectiveness of victims acting as witnesses in court proceedings.

What can Victim Services offer?

Confidential and free services are offered to any person/persons affected by crime or trauma with or without a referral from the RCMP.

Services include but are not limited to:

  • Support and guidance following a sudden death and/or critical incident.

  • Information on the Criminal Justice System               

  • Updates on RCMP files and court appearances

  • Safety Planning

  • Liaison with RCMP and criminal justice personnel 

  • Crisis counselling and emotional and practical support 

  • Referrals to appropriate services

  • Court orientation, support and accompaniment

  • Assistance with Victim Impact Statements and Crime Victim Assistance Program

Frequently Asked Questions 

  • Our trauma informed Victim Service workers are trained to provide emotional and practical support following a sudden death or critical incident. Victim Service workers can provide crisis counselling or simply just be there for you following a death or critical incident. Victim Service workers can assist with practical details such a liaise with the coroner, RCMP and funeral homes, and update those involved in the incident as necessary.

    Please call the Victim Service office if you have questions or need support.

  • Generally, victims do not have to make a statement to police if they do not want to. A victim service worker can help a victim make a decision to report the crime committed by providing information about the RCMP investigative process and the criminal justice system.

  • Maybe. If a charge put forward by the RCMP is approved by Crown Counsel, there is a chance you will have to testify in court down the road.  A Victim Service worker can help prepare and orient a victim for court.

  • You have many rights as a victim.

  • Yes. You can make a Third Party Report (TPR) if you are 19 years old or older.

  • A Victim Impact Statement (VIS) is your written account of how this crime has impacted you emotionally, physically, financially and how it has affected your personal feelings of safety. The VIS is OPTIONAL. If a victim chooses to fill one out, it is presented during sentencing and can be used by a judge when deciding on a sentence. Writing a VIS can be emotionally difficult for victims but a Victim Service Worker is available to help victims of crime/trauma through the process.

  • Yes. The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) provides financial benefits to help offset financial losses and assist in recovery.
